Referral to SRB

Cromer Junior School has had a Key Stage 2 Autism Specialist Resource Base (SRB) since 2009.  Pupils with Autism, or related diagnoses and cognitive abilities to access a mainstream curriculum - once learning barriers have been supported - are considered for placement through the Local Authority Panel process.  (Pupil profile criteria is detailed more fully in the Autism SRB section of the Norfolk SEND Local Offer.)

Once placement is agreed, children transfer to Cromer Junior School and are supported by the SRB to access their mainstream lessons as well as benefitting from additional and specific learning opportunities within the SRB.

Support in School

We pride ourselves on how hard we work across the whole school staff team to successfully include and integrate pupils from the Base into mainstream education.  Individual timetables are devised for each SRB pupil, giving visual information of what to expect throughout the day.  Personal development targets are agreed with pupils as well as general targets based on usual school expectations.  SRB Teaching Assistants work across year groups and support our pupils as needed to encourage participation and independence in accessing their learning.

Daily Routine

Pupils arrive at school and come to the Base 10 minutes early (8.40am) to have time to greet other SRB pupils and staff before going to mainstream class.  SRB pupils return to the Base at specified points during the day to check in with SRB staff, take short breaks, for Base Time, to eat lunch, prepare for going home, assessments, and intervention activities for learning, social and emotional needs.

Supporting Autism

Base Time offers a varied range of activities designed to develop social interaction, emotional literacy, flexibility, and practise essential learning skills, usually within a short group session. The Base staff team offer support at a level appropriate to needs of pupils.  Support strategies are devised, in the form of visual supports, differentiated work tasks, use of additional resources, to enable access to areas of learning that individual pupils may need to develop.

Contact and Progress

Contact between home and school is valued and Base pupils have a Home-School Diary for exchanges of information.  Parents /carers and pupils are consulted and information gathered is included in individual education plans which are used to plan, assess, review and record progress. A wide range of assessments are also carried out to understand individual pupil needs and areas for development.  Regular parent meetings and Annual Reviews take place throughout the year to discuss progress.
